Abstract

The article is devoted to the problems of gaining information for acquiring knowledge and competences while studying the original texts from British quality papers. The task which students in economic high schools face is to learn how a foreign language textbook can contribute to enlarging professional knowledge and mastering skills. Prolific reading is becoming crucial in gaining core competences which necessitate successful employment. The article highlights the difference in the ways of composing and usage of factological and expressive means in mass media articles. Practical exampling of two extracts from a Russian and British text on advertising and promotional strategy supports the view on the issue and gives practical advice on teaching reading technique.
