The article deals with import substitution and export orientation of agricultural products as well as current issues of ensuring food security in Russia. These problems include shortage of many food raw materials, veterinary drugs, breeding stock, seeds and planting materials necessary for the production of essential food products. It is revealed that overcoming the import dependence on major food products facilitated their exports. Russia has become a leading exporter of grain, sunfl ower oil, sugar, and exports of meat, dairy products, and fish are expanding. The promising areas for the country‘s export led growth are identified, including increasing exports of value added agricultural products and ensuring a balance between food imports and exports.
