Abstract

The World Trade Organization deals with the global rules of trade. Its main function is to ensure that trade flows as predictably and freely as possible. The “Bali Package” is the first set of agreements struck since the WTO was created in 1995 and represents a positive step towards concluding the Doha Round of trade negotiations, which began in 2001. “Bali Package” brought significant systemic benefits. The WTO is again a viable forum for negotiations. At present the main challenge for the WTO is building on this success to reenergise multilateral negotiations and ultimately close the Doha Round.
