Soon it will be 25 years from the date of liquidation of monopoly on foreign trade in Russia. But the experience of doing successful business with foreign partners has been partially or completely lost through the shift from the monopoly on foreign trade towards free trade. In this paper, the authors have tried to analyze the causes of this problem, as well as the conceptual apparatus and legal framework of foreign trade. Procedures for the organization and implementation of foreign trade operations are not regulated at all at present, which hinders further development of effective foreign relations, and sometimes leads to financial losses. Russian foreign trade participants should understand and accept the ideology of established trade practices, the observance of which will allow to avoid unjustified losses and, on the contrary, will enable them to enter the market with well-established mechanisms of international contracts.
