Russia has substantial capacity to provide transport services to domestic and foreign businesses that supply products to customers located in Russia and in the countries bordering Russia. Increased use of Russia’s transport services capacity would increase the country’s GDP, thereby benefiting Russia’s economy. Russia can increase the use of its transport services capacity by developing international transport corridors such as the Northern Sea Route (which would increase the volume of products transported between Europe and Asia) and the Trans-Siberian Railway, TransKoreya. Development of the Trans-Siberian Railway would provide a means to transport products between Russia and Europe, providing Russia with a competitive advantage over its neighboring countries. Currently, certain foreign governments develop major transportation projects that bypass Russia. Consequently, Russia is deprived of the economic and political benefi ts that come from using these transportation routes. Due to this exclusionary approach by foreign governments, it is necessary for Russia to independently formulate and implement its own transportation projects so as to strengthen its role in the region.
