Abstract

The paper describes the issues of attracting foreign direct investment and its relationship with economic growth. The paper also considers the statistical definition of foreign direct investment, revealing its limits for analysis of economic processes. The authors show that activities of special purpose entities, presence of round-trip investment and non-equity modes of production tend to impede the proper analysis of international capital movements. The main results of the paper are the theoretical and practical considerations that go beyond the typical investment analysis, which should be taken into account when considering, implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of various investment decisions.
