The comparative advantages of countries in the global high-tech sector: new approaches to assessment

Abstract

The dynamics of production, value added and high-tech processing exports of 26 countries are analysed. Th e author reveals that the countries, which supply high-tech products to international markets, have diff erent production effi ciency. Weighted coeffi cient - value added share in total sales - is proposed for measuring high-tech share in total exports. New indicators of revealed comparative advantages are suggested for objective ranking of countries in global high-tech manufacturing sector. Th ese indicators are based on the principle of specialization: RSP - Revealed Specialization of Production, CAVA - Comparative Advantage in Value Added Activity, REX - Revealed Eff ective Export.
