Abstract

The article considers the key trends in the global energy markets, in particular the market for thermal coal. It substantiates the current role of coal as a key fossil fuel on a global scale and the prospects for changing the directions of the most significant trade deals based on the role of major participants in the global coal market under modern conditions. It is concluded that a significant increase in demand for coal in Europe and Asia in 2021-2022 was caused by the declared reduction in natural gas consumption. Structural shifts in the international trade in thermal coal due to the growing demand for coal against the backdrop of EU ban on the imports of coal from Russia are shown. The reorientation of Russian exports to the countries of South and Southeast Asia is cited as a change in the direction of trade flows from Russia.
